Weaving my way through motherhood whilst trying not to mess up adulthood.

What's in my hospital bag

If you are planning on having a hospital birth is best to have a bag prepared for when your due date arrives. Even if you are having a home birth it is often recommended to have a bag ready just in case you have to be taken into hospital during or after labour.

Having had my bag packed from 33 weeks I thought I would share with you some of the items in mine.

Many people choose to have multiple duffel bags or one large suitcase which is the option I have  opted for. It will be easy for me to wheel into the hospital or for my birth partners. I didn't buy a new or fancy one specifically for the hospital, just one I brought from TXmaxx a few years ago for a holiday.

For Mum

  • Nighties or Vest Tops- It is always nice to have some clean nightwear for post-delivery, with Lei I wore one of mine during labour, but found it too hot so I have also packed a vest top this time so that I am not completely in the nude! An open nightshirt or vest top is also good for easy access for skin to skin or breast feeding.
  • Maternity bra- Brilliant for breast feeding
  • Breast pads
  • Maternity towels
  • Towel
  • Flipflops/slippers
  • Disposable or black underwear
  • lipbalm
  • Makeup
  • Toiletries
  • book/magazine- Now, I am not sure when during labour I think I will have time to squeeze in a couple of chapters from a book but I always carry one with me for just because sake.
  • Thank you cards- The midwives are amazing and its always nice to show appreciation for them, of course this is optional.
  • Maternity notes- Most important

For Baby
  • Baby grows and vests- I have packed some in a mixture of sizes as I'm not sure if this little Bean will be a tiny tot like big sister or perhapes a little bigger. It's good to have a few different sizes.
  • Hats and socks
  • Nappies
  • Blanket
  • Towel
  • Cotton/water wipes
  •  Pre-made bottles- If you plan on bottle feeding these are good if your hospital no longer provide bottles. Also if you are struggling to breastfeed, these can be good to relieve the pressure.
For Birthing partner(s)
  • Snacks and drinks
  • loose change for parking
  • Phone charger
  • Camera
  • Gift for other siblings- When Lei was born, the youngest in our family was my little sister who was 8 at the time and we decided it would be quite sweet for Lei to give her Aunty a little present on her arrival. This time it will be Lei getting a gift, nothing fancy or extravagant just a small bag of a few of her favourite things.

  1. Odd one and I should probably know and potentially just because is a colour that means doesn't show anything. But why black underwear?

Thank you for leaving a comment. You've made me smile :-)
