The pregnancy diaries: Gender Frustration

Eight years ago my first baby was always going to be a surprise. Our hospital would not allow us to find out the gender of our baby so unless we went private we would just have to wait nine months to find out if baby was team pink or blue. Ideally, it would have been great to find out and many a times my mum and I would pinch at the pretty pink blankets and baby grows, adamant in our hearts that the unborn baby was a girl. However, we never brought anything and instead stuck to the obligatory yellows and whites.

Over the years the hospital policy has changed so mums and dads to be can now find out at the 20 week scan the gender of their baby if they so wish. We were so excited to find out, on the day, I even took playful bets as to what everyone thought the baby might be.
So with my bladder full and hospital notes tucked firmly beneath my arm, we all waited in the waiting room for my name to be called. I say we, because we decided to make it a full blown gender reveal party of our own with my partner, mum and little girl.  When my name was called we all trooped in, a flurry of coats and bags and apologies for being in the sonographers way. I got comfortable on the bed and waited for the cold gel to be smothered onto my bump.
Baby was so much bigger than the last scan, and seemed so content belly surfing on my placenta. Yes, throughout the entire scan, little bean decided to stay in the same position, merely waving hand at us as if to say, “ hello, hello, you can leave now” and leave we did. Disappointed that we were none the wiser but with hopes that on the second scan( We had to be rebooked as due to the baby’s position not all the measurements could be done) we might find out.

Three weeks later.

This time I was taking no chances. I walked the length of the corridor, had a sugary breakfast and some orange juice all in the hopes of Bean revealing his or her gender.
And the process began….
All trooped in
Coats and bags
Lie on the bed
Cold gel
Baby will appear on the screen…..
Baby did appear on the screen, belly surfing AGAIN!  The frustration!

The first time, I was so annoyed, we didn’t even request for a picture, but this time, I decided I might as well have something to show little bean.
The good thing was that all the measurements were taken this time so there was no need to book any further scans.

We discussed going to a private scan but to be honest, at this point I was nearly six months, not long until we found out for ourselves.
In the meantime, I have had many people guess or be adamant they know the gender of my baby, with many assuming that I would be disappointed if I had another girl. This is so far from the truth. I have come to realise that many people’s ‘predictions’ are based on the fact that I already have a girl so it must be a boy or they hope for my sake it’s a boy. Whenever, I am asked, whether I want a boy or girl, my honest answer is that I really don’t mind. Either way, boy or girl, this baby is going to be so loved and Lei cannot wait to have a baby brother or sister.

Did you find out the gender of your baby?
