Super Base: How To Make Your Makeup Last Longer

Even when you wear the most minimal make-up, it can be incredibly frustrating to look in the mirror half way through the day to discover that it’s melted off and you resemble melted candle wax. Why does this happen? We may never know, but luckily for us all, there is a way to fix it.

When you’re trying to achieve a fuss-free makeup routine, you can often feel as if adding in another step will increase the amount of time needed to get it done. But, that doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, it can often be a three-second addition to your morning routine that ensures your make-up lasts all day. The trick is really in how you treat your skin. So, if you’re ready to achieve a flawless base, here’s what you need to do.
 Deep Clean

When your foundation looks as if has lifted off of your skin, it has actually separated. It’s an odd concept to get your head around, but it is often down to the natural oils the skin produces. So, to stop that happening, you have to nail your skincare routine. In particular, you want to make sure that you’re cleansing thoroughly and getting rid of unwanted dirt and oils.

Stay Hydrated

When you’ve found a cleansing product, and a cleansing routine, that works well for you, you then need to work on finding a good moisturiser. A good moisturiser can save your skin and y’all know how I feel about making sure your skin remains fully hydrated and not dry. When it’s properly moisturised, you’ll find that your foundation will last a whole lot longer. So, you need to speak to a dermatologist or skincare specialist and see what moisturiser is best for your skin type.

Exfoliate Regularly

Although cleansing and moisturising are important, if you’re struggling to achieve long lasting makeup, perhaps you could try to exfoliate. It's a major step in your beauty routine anyway, but it can also be the reason that your foundation doesn’t last. Using the right products, like vitage, matters, but you also need to make sure that you’re removing dead skin cells and keeping the surface of your skin fresh for when you’re applying make-up.

Prep & Prime

As you start to get your skincare routine into shape, you’re then going to want to move on the ‘limbo’ stage, or the prep stage. When you’ve applied your moisturiser, you can often feel like it’s time to put your makeup on, but it’s not. Now, it’s time to prep your skin, ready for makeup. Foundation primers are the key here. Whether you use a cream or powdered solution, they can often be the one step (that extra three-seconds) that makes all the difference in how your makeup lasts.

Find ‘The’ Foundation

And, of course, the trick to getting your makeup base to last a lot longer can often be down to the actual makeup you use. It’s important to find a foundation that works for your skin type, whether that’s matte, hydrating, or both. For that reason, 'the' one for you, might not be the same as your friend or what your favourite celebs use.

What are your tips for longer lasting makeup?
