9 things not to say to people with allergies

Source

1. Omg, you can't eat [ insert a-z of your chosen food allergy],  What do you eat?
- Food. we eat everything you eat, just not anything that will make us sick, no we don't miss it, yes, we can live without it, and no we are really not missing out

2. I brought this cake, it has nuts, I know your allergic but you can just scrape them off the top

- Thank you for remembering that I have an allergy. Thank you for buying said item to blow my  face off. Thank you for telling me to scrap it off. I hope you have the emergency services on standby!

3. Go on, just try a little bit

--Why? Why would you ask me to do that? I am not an experiment, I am not a toy. I can not try it, not even the smallest bite

4. Why havn't you outgrown it?

--The same reason the sky is blue....I really don't know

5. Just because you have an allergy, doesn't mean your child has an allergy

--This is usually said by someone who doesn't have allergies and doesn't understand that it can be passed down from generation to generation

6. My cousin so and so from far far away was allergic to ants and got this syrup called chddjnfggygysdshkkk. You should try it!

--Maybe, I shouldn't. I understand some people just want to help, but if I wrote the number of times some aunty's brothers best friend's cousin  had a remedy I would be rich

7. So you can't eat peanuts? what about peanut butter?

--   * sigh*

8." Are you alright?"
    "Just hayfever"
"Are you sure your alright? I think your getting a cold"

--Nope, just hayfever. I'll be okay once I sneeze ten more times and itch my eyes for the hundredth time

9. So your 'electric'? or some other hilarious allergy related joke

--My sister when she was younger knew I had a nut allergy. She asked me whilst she was eating peanuts if I was 'electric' ( she meant allergic) and threw a peanut at me. Hilarious at the time because she was only little. But not so funny, if the sufferer has severe reactions to touch and scent

  1. People really don't understand food allergies. I have a tough one. I'm allergic to cow protein in cows milk. However, I can have goats milk and I'm not lactose intolerant. People think I'm making it up when they see me drinking goats milk.

  2. Oh my goodness, people say these things?? I mean, I've heard number 2 from people who don't understand food allergies, but the others are astounding. I must say, I am shocked!

  4. Wow. People really have no idea do they?! Ugh. I can't believe how thoughtless some people can be. I suffer with hayfever and get so fed up of people saying "Are you getting a cold?" I'm like NO ITS HAYFEVER! It wouldn't be so bad but the same person asks me the same question, day in, day out. "I'd go to the doctors if I were you" WHY?! I've told you, it's hayfever! Really irks me lol.

  5. I had a dairy allergy for about 10 years... Set off by a drug reaction and mysteriously went while pregnant. The amount of people that say "oh no, so no milk or eggs?" Really? How many cows have you seen lay an egg? They aren't even next to each other in the shops. I've also had people tell me something is dairy free just because they are too lazy/have thrown away the ingredients list. Let's just find out by seeing if the customer leaves vomiting... Also had the dairy free hot chocolate made in the same jug that had milk in 5 mins before without washing in between. People seem to think it's just some hippie fad diet. Grrr!

    1. Exactly, hippie fad hen in reality can be sooo dangerous. I get the dairy free hot chocolate in the jug with milk in before, the same thing used to happen to me with the same knife being used for peanut butter!! lol I'd love to see a cow lay an egg! :-) x

  6. It's crazy what people say and think in relation to allergies, I've spent years trying to raise awareness because my 13 year old has multiple allergies, including egg, peanut and all nuts as well as sesame, chick peas and peas. I've become pretty good at making egg free/nut free treats so that she doesn't miss out.

  7. I have never suffered with anything like this myself nor has anyone in my family. I do however feel very sorry for people tat have to constantly watch what they are eating due to allergies. eating out must be hard too. However I guess people get used to it and its like normal. x

  8. My Daughter has an egg allergy but people seem incapable of reading labels - one friend wouldn't let her eat a bar of chocolate as that is full of eggs !!
    I feel your pain x

  9. I totally know who this feels! I'm intolerant to a lot of foods and people treat me as if I'm a circus freak!

  10. I'm lactose intolerant (haven't been always). But you can outgrow it. I did. The more I get older and older, the less and less I am intolerant. All allergies and stuff like that are psychological effects, usually caused by big amount of stress (except if you were born with it). It's just all in your head. Just think positive and be happy and it will all go away (except if you were born with it). I you weren't born with it it CAN go away. I know all this from myself

  11. It must be so annoying that people either stick their nose in or say they'll help but then don't/or come up with stupid ideas.

  12. All of these are TRUE! So glad that I am not the only one that goes through this!

  13. Haha the struggle is real it's like I don't eat meat and one time when I ordered a pizza it came with meat so I kindly asked to send it back in return for another pizza. The pizza guy said 'just scrape it off you will be fine'. Er hello I will not be fine and you are disrespecting my wishes plus its underneath the cheese too. Suffice to say they were very rude but they obviously don't understand dietary requirements. As for nuts my friend is always told to eat products that contains nuts despite being severely allergic to them.

  14. Sometimes people are dumb and really should vet what comes out of their mouth. But I guess we all know which of our friends are most likely to do this, but when it comes to strangers, who knows :)

  15. These are all so true! I think the "why haven't you outgrown it" question is the one that annoys me the most. It's not like I enjoy having allergies. Sometimes when people say these kind of things I just stare back at them long enough for them to answer their own {dumb} question. Lol

    1. Exactly, allergies are not fun at all! LOL the blank stare is always a good answer :-) x

  16. I can't believe people actually say these things! Some people just have no common sense! It's like when you're pregnant and someone see's you and says "Oh, no baby then?" when you're still quite clearly pregnant!!!!

  17. My boyfriend is allergic to cheese and he gets rashes all over his body when he can't resist taking a few bites of pizza. I try and stop him but he insists so he's taking in antihistamine. I am guilty of doing a few of these things not to irritate him but to kinda make things la little bit lighter and he just laughs everything off. Just to be fair, when we have a date or any meal, I make sure that I, too, avoid any food he's allergic to. When I'm not with him, I tend to eat those that I avoid.

  18. Good grief - the things some people say! Thank goodness I have no allergies - my sons were lactose intolerant, that's bad enough. Kaz x

  19. I definitely heard some of these. I have nuts allergies. A couple of year ago one of my coworkers saved me lunch that was catered to our company. It was very thoughtful of her, she knew I had nuts allergies. She still prepped me the salad that had nuts "in the corner" of the salad, and it was not mixed she said. I blew up like Will Smith in Hitch 2 hours after eating not knowing she has done that. Luckily I had my epi pen and I work in a medical facility. LOL. People just assume and they do not realize that this is something that can kill a person.

  20. Hey, thanks! This is a good article - especially for clueless folks who might really have no idea how tough it is to live with a food allergy!

  23. I've been allergic to coconut in various forms for about 8 years, with the allergy becoming progressively broad-- I can't use conventional soaps and shampoo because they contain coconut derivatives. Somehow, I recently tested negative for any allergies A former roommate suggested I'd outgrown the allergy because I accidentally ate coconut and didn't require a trip to the ER. Non-anaphylactic doesn't mean it's not real!
