Netflix: Orange Is The New Black

I have been a member on Netflix for the past year and although many have said that they find it lacking in 'up to date' movies and television shows, I have stuck with it.

Well, because I know it has potential to be great. Afterall, it is popular in other countries, so it must be doing something right. Albeit, we apparently don't have as many shows as our friends across the pond, but we have got some good 'uns.

Orange Is the New Black is one such show.

Orange Is the New Black is one of Netflix's original programmes and out of all of the 'originals' that they have produced this one is definitely the best.

Based on a memoir by Piper Kerman, Orange Is the New Black tells the story of Kerman's stint in a women's prison in Connecticut, for a crime of smuggling drug money fifteen years ago.

Although set in  a prison, the show manages to highlight serious issues but then also be light hearted. There were many times that I laughed out loud, especially when an inmate known as 'Crazy eyes' takes an interest in Piper and nicknames her 'Dandelion'.

The story is ultimately Piper Kerman's, but viewers are offered an insight into the other inmates lives in the way of flash backs, by telling their stories and how they ended up in prison.

There are thirteen episodes in season one, and I really hope that a season two is in the pipeline. I've laughed, cheered and cried...( I was a wreck for the season finale) and even though I've watched it all, I don't want it to end. I want to know what happens to not only Piper but for some of the others that I've grown attached to, like Larry and Red.

Seeing as the show was inspired by a book, I might just give it a read and hope that it's as good, or even better than the show.

Orange Is The New Black is available now on Netflix and the book can be brought online.

Rating 5/5
